Abstract
Antarctica remains one of Earth’s great enigmas: a frozen continent whose vast white expanse hides many secrets of our planet’s climate. At the continent’s fringes lie the ice shelves, immense floating extensions of the Antarctic Ice Sheet. Those shelves, mapped in figure 1, act as natural buttresses that hold back the massive inland ice sheets and slow their flow into the ocean.
